The Neem and mango tree both have been backyard trees for us since childhood and also, it has been an inseparable part of our ancient Ayurveda. The old nurse’s tale we all must have heard from our grandparents that despite being bitter, the Neem (Azadirchta indica) holds ample virtues in it. Its bitter taste comes from bioactive compounds such as Azadirachtin, Nimbin, and Nimbidin and these compounds give the Neem its medicinal properties.
In rural parts of our country, people use its stalk as a natural toothbrush that keeps your dental hygiene in check. In fact, our ancestors’ analogy was just right. And the most miraculous part is we can use every part of this tree, from the stalk, and bark to leaves. But do you know that it can be used as a natural detox too? How? Often we refer to the Neem as the whole ‘village pharmacy’, why such term? Because, from centuries, we use this tree’s parts as a traditional medicine for several diseases.
Recently, its popularity has become more relevant after the pandemic, especially for the Neem powder that is derived from the dried leaves. When consumed as a drink, it works as a detoxifying agent.
